Jesus and the Death Penalty: Romans 13 or the Golden Rule?

Under the New Covenant made possible by the death and resurrection of Jesus, Christians are under no such obligation to protect society, or even to obey its norms, customs, or dictates—rather we are to transcend and transform it. The whole point of grace is that no matter what we do, God loves us, and that he no longer requires—or even desires—that anyone be punished for anything.

Trumpocalypse Now: How Trump Won One of the Greatest David v. Goliath Victories in the History of Politics

I think it’s safe to say that the opposition to Donald Trump—in both intensity and scope—is greater than for any other president, and will stay that way. For many of those most upset, I think it’s the fact that a ridiculously boorish celebrity with no respect for how their great game of American politics is played beat them at it so badly.

The day after the election, I decided to not write anything here until the New Year. Although I had long been certain that Trump would beat Hillary, not many other people were. I was bewildered by the reactions that so many people had to the Trump victory, and the sheer volume and range of opinions, fears, and analyses being discussed made me conclude that publishing anything in that environment would be as futile as the proverbial screen door on a submarine.

Love Your Neighbor, or Mandate Tolerance?

Just yesterday, I mentioned on by personal Facebook page that I had added “transgender” to my list of terms that I wish I could block from my news feed. It’s neither the word nor the people it describes that sicken me, but rather the ignorant and inconsiderate attitudes that just about everyone displays when discussing the transgender bathroom issue.

And then this morning, here comes this story: U.S. Directs Public Schools to Allow Transgender Access to Restrooms. So, I guess “transgender” will be one of the key words in what promises to be the most cacophonous presidential campaign season in history.
